March. March Madness. The onset of Spring. Warmer weather (fingers are crossed for this one.) And in central Louisiana? March means outdoors.
More specifically, March means enjoying the Central Louisiana Outdoor Adventure Festival. The festival celebrates the great outdoors through events, tournaments, festivals, and more. The March calendar is full of activities - many of which are perfect for an entire family outing.
The first week of March hosts the monthly installment of Abendmusik Alexandria, the evening music series presented by the Arts Council of Central Louisiana. This month, enjoy the Young Artists Chamber Orchestra of Alexandria as they perform selections from film, musical theatre, and popular song.
If history is your passion, check out the Red River Campaign Commemoration events happening Thursday through Sunday. Thursday evening head to Forts Randolph/Buhlow State Historic Site to dine on Civil War era food and drink and listen to the presentation "Campfires to Canned Goods: Feeding Two Armies during the Red River Campaign."
The Forts will be open Friday, during normal operating hours, with demonstration stations - infantry, medical, camps - positioned on the grounds. Continue the evening at Kent Plantation House, beginning at 6 p.m., with wine & cheese and music provided by Roscoe, Lee & Abadie followed by Dr. T. Michael Parrish’s presentation on "Gen. Richard Taylor, the Red River, and Total War".
For more historical action, check out the battle re-enactment at the Forts on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
If sports is more your thing, you may want to head over to Johnny Downs Sports Complex for the Alexandria Senior High Softball Tournament or to Ward 9 Sportsplex for the USSSA Baseball Tournament. If outdoor recreation is your passion, the Archery in Louisiana Schools State Tournament will be taking place all day at the LSUA Ag Center.
Step out to the theatre this week. LBM Productions and Miller Physical Therapy present "Seussical the Musical" at Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center. Or experience the dinner theatre "Memories of the Red River Campaign" at Tyrone Plantation Saturday evening.
